MARTIN, Tenn. – Fresh off finals week at the University of Tennessee at Martin, the Skyhawk men's basketball squad hosts the Chicago State Cougars at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center on Sunday, Dec. 11. Tipoff time is set for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
UT Martin (4-5) is back in action for the first time in over a week as the Skyhawks fell 90-83 in a close call last Saturday at UNC Asheville. UT Martin shot 50.8 percent (33-of-65) from the field and displayed a balanced scoring attack as KJ Simon's 20 points led all scorers. KK Curry (season-best 15 points), Jordan Sears (13 points in 18 minutes), Parker Stewart (12 points) and Koby Jeffries (season-high 11 points) also cracked double figures in the scoring column for the Skyhawks, who lost for the first time this season while scoring at least 80 points (was previously 4-0).
Overall, UT Martin leads the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring offense (81.2 points per game), field goal percentage (.469), rebounding (38.7 per game) and steals (9.9 per game). The Skyhawks and Tennessee State are the only two OVC squads to start off the 2022-23 campaign with an unblemished 4-0 record at home.
Stewart (23.0 points per game) and Simon (21.0 points per game) have combined for 52 percent of UT Martin's scoring over the last two contests, posting 88 of the team's 169 points. Stewart was named OVC Player of the Week on Monday and currently ranks second in the OVC in scoring at 16.3 points per game while Preseason OVC Player of the Year Simon (16.0 points per game) follows closely behind in third place.
This marks the start of seven straight road games for Chicago State (3-7), who is a NCAA Division I independent program after nine years of competing in the Western Athletic Conference. The Cougars are coming off a 78-61 home victory over Southern Indiana last Sunday, connecting on 44.8 percent (13-for-29) of their three-point attempts. Brent Davis scored a game-high 18 points off the bench while Jahsean Corbett (16), Bryce Johnson (14) and Wesley Cardet, Jr. (11) also scored in double digits.
