The University of Tennessee at Martin will play its final home game of the non-conference season when playing host to former Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State on Wednesday, Nov. 30. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
With just three non-conference home games on the 2022-23 slate, the Skyhawks (2-4) return home for their final game in the Elam Center before hitting the road for their next six games over the course of December. UT Martin is hoping to rely on its home court advantage against a familiar foe, as the Skyhawks are 131-34 at home under the direction of head coach Kevin McMillan.
UT Martin is coming off an MTE appearance at the Hostilo Hoops Community Classic in Savannah, Ga. prior to the Thanksgiving holiday. The Skyhawks went 1-2 in the field with a pair of setbacks to Marshall (70-57) and Norfolk State (70-55) before capping off their stay with a 30-point win over Purdue Fort Wayne (81-51) in the finale.
Some of the top performances for the Skyhawks in the Hostilo Hoops Community Classic came on the shoulders of freshman forward Sharnecce Currie-Jelks who was rewarded for her play by being named both OVC Freshman of the Week and to the all-tournament team. Currie-Jelks scored in double figures in all three games while averaging 16.0 points and 4.7 rebounds per game while shooting 51.4 percent from the field. Fellow freshman Lexi Rubel also had a big performance in the finale against Purdue Fort Wayne in which she tallied career highs in both points (12) and rebounds (seven).
Murray State (3-1) has been successful through the early portion of the team's schedule. The Racers are led by reigning OVC Player of the Year and Preseason All-Missouri Valley performer Kaitlyn Young who averages 17.3 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. The squad also features veteran guard Macey Turley who chips in 12.5 points and 4.2 assists per night.
The two programs have a vast series history with 95 previous meetings while UT Martin leads the all-time series 58-37. During the McMillan Era, the Skyhawks have gone 24-6 against the Racers – including an 11-2 mark in the Elam Center.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ while Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Eddie Suiter (analyst) will have the call locally on WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links - plus a link to follow along with live stats - can be found at the top of the webpage.
