
SKYHAWK MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYS HOST TO CHAMPION CHRISTIAN IN 2022-23 HOME OPENER TOMORROW

MARTIN, Tenn. – A busy opening week of the 2022-23 campaign for the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball program continues with a Saturday, Nov. 12 matchup against Champion Christian at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. live on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (0-2) are in search of their first victory of the young season as UT Martin fell against stout nonconference opponents Pitt (80-58) and Youngstown State (90-72) in a three-day span earlier this week. Preseason Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year KJ Simon led the Skyhawks in scoring in both contests, including a 19-point effort at Youngstown State.
This game will be the first home outing for four UT Martin newcomers as well as the first official appearance in the Elam Center for Parker Stewart in 989 days (since Feb. 27, 2020). Stewart scored his 1,000th collegiate point on Wednesday as exactly 500 of those points have come in a Skyhawk uniform.
UT Martin and Champion Christian have met once before, a 115-29 Skyhawk victory on Nov. 20, 2014 in the Elam Center. In that game, UT Martin set school records for largest margin of victory (86 points) and fewest points allowed since making the transition over to NCAA Division I basketball in 1992.
A National Christian College Athletic Association program located in Hot Springs, Ark., Champion Christian (1-0) has played one official game and four exhibitions so far this season. This matchup is the fourth of eight exhibitions against NCAA Division I squads on the Tigers' 2022-23 docket.
In its last action, Champion Christian fell 87-55 at Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Wednesday. The Tigers trailed by only two points (35-33) at the halftime break to a Lion squad that previously lost by just one point to No. 14 TCU on Monday. Joshua Walpole scored a team-high 11 points but Champion Christian committed 25 turnovers and shot 14.3 percent (3-for-21) from three-point land.
