WACO, Texas – There was a major shakeup in today's National Collegiate Equestrian Association rankings as seven of the 10 spots changed from last week, including the University of Tennessee at Martin moving from No. 9 to No. 10.
The Skyhawks fell one spot in the poll despite the fact they posted a victory in their only action of the week, a 9-1 victory over Dartmouth during the season opener on Oct. 1. TCU is the new No. 1 team in the country and is followed by No. 2 SMU, No. 3 Texas A&M, No. 4 Oklahoma State, No. 5 Georgia, No. 6 Auburn, No. 7 South Carolina, No. 8 Baylor, No. 9 Fresno State and No. 10 UT Martin.
Now appearing in all three sets of rankings to begin the 2022-23 season, the Skyhawks looked sharp during their first taste of competition. UT Martin swept all five head-to-head matchups in fences, averaging a team score of 81.4 points. Sydney Hott led the way with an 86-point MOP performance, leading to Eastern College Athletic Conference Rider of the Week accolades. She was followed by Haley Kane (84), Tyler Anderson (80), Elizabeth Becker (79) and Julia Gilman (78).
In flat, it was Hott who once again led the charge last Saturday as the Defiance, Mo. native was responsible for a MOP effort of 80 points. Gilman came away with a win after posting 77 points while Kane and Sophia Sundem each earned victories following 73-point performances.
The Skyhawks were originally set to return to action this week but it was announced today that their two meets would be rescheduled because of coastal flooding due to the remnants of Hurricane Ian. UT Martin will now square off against current No. 1 TCU on Thursday, Oct. 13 and Delaware State on Friday, Oct. 14 in Fenton, Del.
