
UT MARTIN SOCCER TO PLAY MOREHEAD STATE IN OVC TOURNAMENT QUARTERFINALS

The No. 7 seeded University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team kept its season alive last night with a thrilling win to push the squad into the Ohio Valley Conference Soccer Championship quarterfinals. The Skyhawks will now square off against No. 3 seed and first/second round host Morehead State on Sunday, Oct. 30 at noon.

The Skyhawks (4-9-4) picked up a thrilling shutout victory in their first round matchup against No. 6 seed Little Rock. In a game which was scoreless for the first 61 minutes, a perfect lead pass by Brooke Kala set up Nyeemah Prescod-Beckles for the go-ahead score in the 62nd minute. With a score on the board, UT Martin anchored down defensively to preserve the team's fifth shutout of the season – including a key save by midfielder Izzy Patterson in the final two minutes.
With the victory, the Skyhawks improved to 11-15-2 all-time in the tournament field as the squad is making their 19th appearances. UT Martin and Morehead State have been frequent opponents over the course of tournament history with five previous matchups while the Eagles hold a slight 3-2 advantage.
Morehead State makes its tournament debut after finishing the regular season in third place with a 7-6-3 overall mark while going 4-2-2 in league play. The Eagles boast two of the top five point scorers in the league this season with Hadley Cytron (four goals, four assists) ranking third while Nicole Fiantaco (four goals, three assists) sits in fifth. Meanwhile in goal, Erin Gibbs has allowed just eight goals this season with a 0.84 goals against average while posting an .855 save percentage.
In the previous matchup earlier this season, Morehead State picked up a 3-1 win at UT Martin back on Sept. 25. The Eagles took an early lead with a goal by in the 11th minute and eventually took a three-goal advantage behind the duo of Cytron and Fiantaco before Sophia Mankowski got the Skyhawks on the board in the 70th minute.
