MARTIN, Tenn. – The fall portion of the University of Tennessee at Martin's 2022-23 golf schedule wraps up on Monday, Oct. 24 as the Skyhawks host Western Kentucky in the Clash at the Country Club in Paducah, Ky.
The fifth and final tournament on UT Martin's fall slate, the 18-hole match play event will take place at the Country Club of Paducah. Built in 1984 by notable golf architect Robert Trent Jones, Sr., the par-72 course plays at 7,014 yards. The Skyhawks and Hilltoppers will send out six representatives apiece with the first wave teeing off Hole No. 1 at 9:30 a.m. The next five pairings to follow suit in 10-minute intervals.
Monday's forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies, a high of 81 degrees and a low of 64. Winds will approach 12 miles per hour coming out of the south.
This event marks the third match play event for UT Martin since the start of last season. The Skyhawks won the inaugural Carpenter/Chaney Classic on April 4-5, 2022 in Tunica, Miss., going 3-0 against the likes of Austin Peay, Murray State and Tennessee Tech. A little over three weeks later in Cape Girardeau, Mo., UT Martin defeated Morehead State and Tennessee Tech en route to the third Ohio Valley Conference championship in school history.
"I'm excited to wrap up our fall with this event," Skyhawk head coach Austin Swafford said. "Match play is once again going to be a part of the OVC Tournament so if we were to make it that far come April, this experience will pay dividends for our team. The Country Club of Paducah will be a great test of golf for both teams."
For the Clash at the Country Club, Swafford has selected a lineup of Jonathan Xoinis, Ethan Ray, Garrett Chumley, Dax Isbell, Cayden Chambers and Rocco Zakutney (who will be playing in his hometown). Last season, Xoinis and Chumley each boasted 4-1 records in head-to-head match play competition. Chambers also added one victory during the Carpenter/Chaney Classic.
"We have had a different lineup each week this fall and this last event is no different," Swafford said. "The guys we have this week are all capable of playing well and I'm excited to see how they do in the match play format. Western Kentucky has a good team so we'll have to be disciplined and focused in all areas."
