10/20/2022 10:48:00 AM | Volleyball
MARTIN, Tenn. – For the second consecutive home weekend, the University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball plays host to a first-year Ohio Valley Conference opponent as the Skyhawks take on the Lindenwood Lions on Oct. 21-22. First serve on Friday is set for 6 p.m. while Saturday's match is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
Currently sitting atop the OVC standings, UT Martin (14-9, 8-2 OVC) is back in action for the first time since splitting a road doubleheader at second-place Eastern Illinois last Friday. Overall, the Skyhawks played in a trio of five-set matches in the span of four days last week (also posting a midweek victory at Tennessee State).
Graduate outside hitter Logan Wallick is coming off a monster week for UT Martin, eclipsing the 15-kill mark in all three matches. Karen Scanlon was one dig shy of three consecutive double-doubles while Angel Baylark also sported a heavy right hand in the Eastern Illinois doubleheader, piling up 25 kills on a sizzling .476 hitting percentage.
The Skyhawks enter this weekend as the OVC leaders in attack percentage (.205), kills (12.67 per set) and assists (11.72 per set). Additionally, UT Martin ranks in the top-eight nationally in total kills (1,115), overall assists (1,031) and total service aces (148).
In league play, Baylark's .333 hitting percentage ranks third while Wallick ranks fourth in kills (3.48 per set) against OVC opponents. Defensively, true freshman Mia Saenz has swatted away the second-most blocks (1.29 per set) in conference play.
These two schools have never faced each other on a volleyball court as the Lions are in the first year of a transition to the NCAA Division I level after announcing their move to the OVC in February.
Lindenwood has won four of its last six decisions – resulting in a 7-11 overall record (4-5 in OVC play). The Lions top the OVC in service aces with 1.97 per set, a number that jumps up to 2.17 per set against conference foes. Taylor Gentemann's 0.55 service aces per set lead the league while Mackenzi Sifuentes boasts an OVC-best .392 attack percentage in conference play.
