MARTIN, Tenn. – For the first time in 26 days, the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad will play in front of its home crowd when the Skyhawks collide against Ohio Valley Conference foe Belmont on Saturday, Jan. 8. The game is the backend of a doubleheader with the women's team and will begin at approximately 3:30 p.m.
UT Martin (6-8 overall) currently sits atop the OVC standings with an unblemished 2-0 record, starting its conference slate with back-to-back wins for the first time since the 2002-03 season. During their 2-0 start, the Skyhawks have boasted a steady balance of offensive (19 three-pointers on a .422 percentage) and defensive (7.5 steals and 7.0 blocks per contest) success.
On Thursday, UT Martin led for nearly 39 minutes in a 94-78 dismantling at Tennessee State. Bernie Andre tossed in 24 points while KJ Simon (21 points, career-best five blocks), Mikel Henderson (13 points, team-high four assists, career-best three steals), Chris Nix (12 points, perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe) and Josh Endicott (12 points, team-high six rebounds) were also major contributors. The 94 points were the most for a Skyhawk squad against an OVC opponent since Jan. 13, 2016 as UT Martin committed just five turnovers.
This matchup features two of the nation's premier guards in KJ Simon and Grayson Murphy. Simon is the only NCAA Division I player to average at least 18.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.5 blocks per game while Murphy - the OVC's Co-Preseason Player of the Year - is the lone Division I player to average at least 8.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 2.5 steals per contest.
The Bruins (11-3, 1-0 OVC) are coming off a resounding 102-62 home triumph over Southeast Missouri in their league opener on Thursday. Three-time All-OVC first teamer Nick Muszynski and freshman Will Richard shared the team lead with 17 points for Belmont, who lead the OVC in three-point field goals made (9.3 per game), free throw percentage (.763), assist-to-turnover ratio (1.5) and turnover margin (+3.21).
