MARTIN, Tenn. – For the second time in three weeks, the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball program clashes against the Belmont Bruins when the Ohio Valley Conference foes meet on Saturday, Jan. 29. Tipoff time is set for 2 p.m. as this is the first game of a men's/women's doubleheader at the Curb Event Center.
These two squads met on Jan. 8 in Martin as Belmont came away with an 81-55 win. The Skyhawks were paced by Chris Nix's career-best 17 points (on 8-of-9 shooting) while Bernie Andre tossed in 15 points to go along with a game-high six rebounds in a game that featured seven lead changes in the opening half.
UT Martin (7-14, 3-6 OVC) will look to bounce back from a 58-53 home setback at the hands of Eastern Illinois on Thursday. Despite a season-low scoring output, the Skyhawks were tied with two minutes remaining but could not break through. Andre registered his third consecutive double-double with 18 points and a season-high 12 rebounds while KK Curry was responsible for 16 points and five rebounds while setting career-highs in blocks (three) and steals (two).
UT Martin has been solid in OVC away games, splitting its first four decisions. KJ Simon (18.5 points per outing), Andre (15.8 points, 7.5 rebounds per contest) and Mikel Henderson (10.0 points per game) have performed well in OVC road environments.
The national leader in assists with 18.9 per contest, Belmont (16-5, 6-2 OVC) is coming off a 75-67 road win at Austin Peay on Thursday. The Bruins displayed extremely balanced scoring as Ben Sheppard (18 points), Will Richard (16), Nick Muszynski (15) and Luke Smith (15) each had notable offensive performances.
In the Jan. 8 matchup against the Skyhawks, Muszynski poured in 20 points on 10-of-12 shooting while Sheppard scored 13 points. Preseason OVC Co-Player of the Year Grayson Murphy added 12 points and a game-high eight assists for Belmont, whose only league losses are to OVC co-leaders Murray State and Morehead State.
This game will be streamed live on ESPN+ while Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Brandon Burke (color) will call all the action locally on WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links - plus a link to follow along with live stats - can be found at the top of the webpage.
