DALLAS, Texas – Three of the four MOP's awarded today belonged to the University of Tennessee at Martin as the No. 9 ranked Skyhawks rolled to a 10-6 victory over No. 7 Delaware State.
Today's win avenged an early season loss to the Hornets, who defeated UT Martin by a 13-7 margin on Oct. 1. It was a different story today as the Skyhawks swept all four horsemanship points, took three of four points in fences, won a pair of flat decisions and added one win in the reining event.
Winning MOP accolades for UT Martin today was Haley Kane (78 points in fences), Sophia Sundem (82.5 points in flat) and Paige Benson (74.5 points in horsemanship). It marked the fourth career MOP for Kane (second in fences), third career MOP for Benson, and first MOP victory for Sundem, who just made her official collegiate debut yesterday against No. 6 SMU.
Benson's 74.5-point effort set the tone for a Skyhawk sweep in horsemanship as it was the first win of the season for the junior out of Spokane, Wash. Both Kate Davis and Katelyn Schultz collected their second victories of the year in this event with rides of 72.5 points and 71.5 points, respectively. Keely Seiter tallied her team-best fourth win of the season after a 71-point performance.
In fences, Kane's score of 78 was good enough for her fifth win and second MOP of the 2021-22 campaign. Kelby Kane accounted for a team-best 84 points as she continued her perfect season (eight victories in eight tries). Julia Gilman clinched another point for UT Martin following her 76-point effort.
Sundem shined in flat as her score of 82.5 was eight points better than her head-to-head competitor. Anderson managed her team-best sixth win (third in a row) after recording 73.5 points. Haley Kane (65.5 points) and Kelby Kane (63.5) also represented the Skyhawks in the event.
UT Martin received a team point in reining thanks to Logan Putvinski, who won for the third time in her last four meets with 69.5 points. Brooke Bradley (70.5) secured the highest score on the squad while Davis (69.5) and Shelby Jackson (68.5) followed closely behind.
The Skyhawks put the finishing touches on their spring-opening road trip through the Lone Star State tomorrow when they battle No. 10 TCU in Fort Worth.
