The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team returns home for its first game in the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center in 26 days when playing host to Ohio Valley Conference foe Eastern Illinois on Thursday, Jan. 27. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (5-11, 2-3 OVC) are hoping a return to the Elam Center will spark a jolt into the team. Since 2009, UT Martin has found an abundance of success at home by posting a 126-30 mark against visiting opponents. The Skyhawks have especially excelled against OVC foes by winning 87.5 percent of their home games with an overall mark of 91-13 on Pat Head Summitt Court.
In the team's most recent contest, UT Martin picked up its first win of 2022 with a 64-50 road win at Morehead State. Despite playing with a limited roster, the Skyhawks shot 46.0 percent from the floor and picked up their fifth consecutive win against the Eagles to even the all-time series. Leading the way for the Skyhawks was the freshman pair of Shae Littleford who scored a game-high 17 points while Ella Thompson tallied her first double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
UT Martin guard Paige Pipkin leads the team and ranks seventh in the OVC with 13.7 points per game while tallying 4.1 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. She is joined in double figures by Littleford who has flourished in conference play to bump her scoring average up to 10.4 points per game – including an average of 14.2 points against league opponents.
Eastern Illinois (8-10, 3-4 OVC) dropped its most recent matchup to Tennessee Tech on Monday evening (65-60) after picking up back-to-back wins last weekend against Murray State and Southeast Missouri. The Panthers feature three starters who have scoring averages in double figures including Lariah Washington (14.9 ppg, 4.6 rpg), Abby Wahl (11.3 ppg, 5.4 rpg) and Kira Arthofer (10.4 ppg, 4.8 apg).
Over the past week, the Panthers were highlighted by the play of freshman guard Julia Bengtson who was named OVC Co-Freshman of the Week after starting all three games. Bengtson averaged 12.7 points per game while shooting 48.5 percent from the field. She also tallied seven assists and eight steals for the week.
The matchup marks the 60th meeting between the two programs with UT Martin holding a 39-20 advantage in the series since 1975. The Skyhawks have won five consecutive games against the Panthers, including 12 straight meetings inside the Elam Center.
