MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball program kicks off its participation in the annual Coaches vs. Cancer initiative on Thursday, Jan. 27 against Eastern Illinois at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center. Tipoff time is set for 8 p.m. (following the conclusion of the women's basketball game that begins at 5:30 p.m.).
For over 25 years, the National Association of Basketball Coaches and American Cancer Society have partnered for the Coaches vs. Cancer program. The Skyhawk coaching staff will don custom designed "Suits and Sneakers" pullovers provided by the NABC to raise funds and awareness for cancer research.
UT Martin (7-13, 3-5 Ohio Valley Conference) has won three consecutive decisions against the Panthers, sweeping Eastern Illinois last season for the first time since the 2014-15 campaign. This has annually been one of the most competitive series in the OVC as 12 of the last 14 meetings have been decided by 10 points or less (five of which were decided in overtime).
The Skyhawks are coming off a 76-70 victory over SIUE on Monday as KJ Simon (24 points), David Didenko (14), Koby Jeffries (12) and Bernie Andre (11) all reached double figures in the scoring column. Andre added a game-high 10 rebounds for his second straight double-double as UT Martin sank 93.5 percent (29-for-31) of its free throw tries - including 15 in a row over the final 6:13 to close out the win.
Under first-year head coach Marty Simmons, the Panthers (2-17, 0-6 OVC) are looking for their first victory since Dec. 4. The schedule has done Eastern Illinois no favors as four of the Panthers' six OVC contests so far have been against Murray State, Morehead State and Belmont (who are a combined 20-2 in league play).
Freshman Paul Bizimana tops Eastern Illinois with 12.2 points per game against conference foes, tossing in a game-high 20 points in a 90-56 setback at Belmont on Monday. Kashawn Charles also added 17 points for the Panthers.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ while Chris Brinkley will have the radio call live from courtside locally on WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links, as well as a link for live stats, are located above.
