MARTIN, Tenn. – A short two-game homestand for the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team wraps up with the Skyhawks' second matchup against Ohio Valley Conference foe Austin Peay in the span of three weeks. Tipoff time on Thursday, Jan. 20 is set for 6 p.m. (moved up because of the postponement of the women's basketball contest).
These two squads met in the OVC opener on Dec. 30 as UT Martin netted a 65-62 road victory. The Skyhawks led by as many as 13 points in the first half before the lead changed hands seven times over the final 20 minutes. KJ Simon (26 points, game-high four blocks), Bernie Andre (14 points, team-best nine rebounds) and Mikel Henderson (12 points, game-high five assists) helped UT Martin snap a four-game skid in games played at Clarksville.
If the past is any indicator, this matchup will come down to a tight finish. Since 2013, eight of the nine contests between these two sides in the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center have been decided by single digits - five of which have come by three points or less. With a win, the Skyhawks would sweep the regular season series against the Governors for just the fourth time (first since the 2016-17 campaign) since joining the OVC in 1992.
UT Martin (6-11, 2-3 OVC) is coming off a 76-70 home setback to Tennessee Tech on Saturday. In that game, the Skyhawks maintained a lead for nearly 33 minutes but a late 12-2 Golden Eagle run proved to be the difference. Henderson went off for a career-best 18 points while the frontcourt trio of KK Curry (13 points), Chris Nix (12 points, nine rebounds, career-high four blocks) and Josh Endicott (12 points, nine rebounds, career-best three assists) also stood out for UT Martin.
Austin Peay (4-9, 0-3 OVC), who has not played since Jan. 8, enters on a six-game losing streak. In the Dec. 30 matchup against the Skyhawks, Charlotte transfer Caleb Stone-Carrawell registered 15 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals while true freshman Elijah Hutchins-Everett posted 15 points and eight rebounds.
