MARTIN, Tenn. – The 2021 Ohio Valley Conference Golf Championship will take place on Sunday, April 25 through Tuesday, April 27 as the University of Tennessee at Martin is one of 11 schools vying for the right to be called league champion.
Once again, the Fighting Joe course at The Shoals on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Muscle Shoals, Ala. is the host site as the OVC Championship has taken place there since 2014. The par-72 course, which opened in 2004, will play at 7,258 yards.
The official practice round is scheduled for Saturday, April 24 at noon while the presentation of All-OVC, All-Newcomer, Player, Freshman and Coach of the Year awards will take place at approximately 5:30 p.m.
The three-day, 54-hole event starts on Sunday as the Skyhawks will tee off on Hole No. 1 alongside SIUE and Morehead State. Jacob Uehlein will lead things off at 8:40 a.m. and will be followed by Ross Redmont (8:50), Jack Story (9:00), Tate Chumley (9:10) and Nick Wolf (9:20).
Round 2 of the tournament is set for Monday and is followed by the third round on Tuesday. The weather forecast calls for a high of 75 degrees and partly cloudy skies on Sunday, followed by a high of 82 degrees and mostly sunny conditions on Monday. The high reaches 85 degrees on Tuesday with partly cloudy skies while the wind is projected to vary from 7 to 13 miles per hour throughout the tournament.
UT Martin enters the tournament on a roll, winning four of its six regular season tournaments in 2020-21 under first-year head coach Austin Swafford. The Skyhawks lead the OVC with a 286.7 scoring average – 1.7 strokes better than second-place Jacksonville State.
Wolf paces UT Martin as the junior from Murfreesboro, Tenn. has made a legitimate case for OVC Golfer of the Year accolades. The two-time All-OVC performer has won two tournaments – earning OVC Golfer of the Week honors after each victory – and leads the league with a 70.3 stroke average. He has four top-four finishes to his 2020-21 résumé and has finished no lower than 15th all season. This marks his third OVC Championship appearance as his career-best round was a 70 in the third round of the 2019 event.
Also a junior from Murfreesboro, Tenn., Chumley ranks third in the OVC in scoring average (71.8). He is responsible for four top-10 finishes this season and delivered countable scores in 16 out of 17 possible rounds as a member of the Skyhawk scoring lineup. He was named OVC Golfer of the Week on March 4 after finishing third in the field of 66 golfers at the Gulf Coast Collegiate. This will be his third career appearance at the OVC Championship, with his career-low 70 coming in the second round in 2019.
Coming off an All-OVC season is Story as the senior lefty has two top-10 and four top-15 finishes this spring. The Dickson, Tenn. product ranks ninth in the OVC with a 72.6 stroke average and also managed 16 countable rounds out of 17 in UT Martin's lineup this season. The veteran of the group, Story will be making his fourth career OVC Championship appearance (low rounds of 73 in the 2017 second round and 2018 first round).
Redmont's 73.5 scoring average ranks 15th in the OVC individual standings as the redshirt senior from Memphis, Tenn. is coming off back-to-back All-OVC campaigns. He took part in four tournaments this season and recorded nine countable scores in 11 opportunities. This will mark the third OVC Championship appearance of his career as he carded back-to-back 70's in his final two rounds of the 2019 event.
Making his OVC Championship debut will be Uehlein as the Tullahoma, Tenn. native missed out during last season's cancelled event. The 2020 All-OVC Newcomer played in four tournaments this year and is coming off his best finish – placing 10th in the field of 63 at the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate on April 12-13. Overall, the freshman garnered nine countable scores in 12 opportunities this spring, leading to a 74.3 stroke average.
Also making the trip will be redshirt senior Peyton Dix, who is the Skyhawks' alternate for the tournament. The southpaw from Eads, Tenn. has mostly competed as an individual in 2020-21 but has improved in the standings during each of his four tournaments, culminating in a season-best score of 220 (+7) at the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate.
