EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The University of Tennessee at Martin received a victory out of the No. 4 singles slot today from Sina Albersmeier but it wasn't enough as the host SIUE Cougars claimed a 6-1 win in Ohio Valley Conference tennis action.
Albersmeier won her third singles decision in the last four matches, striking for a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Melissa Vizcardo. It marked the team-high seventh singles victory of the season for the junior out of Moers, Germany as she also improved to a team-best 5-2 in OVC singles play.
However, that was the only success that the Skyhawks would find. Amelia Campbell almost came out on top at No. 1 singles but fell in a third-set tiebreaker (6-2, 0-6, 7-6). Mizuki Sakurai was defeated 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 while Jillian Niedzialowski fell 6-2, 6-3 out of the No. 6 slot. Jule Streif (lost 6-2, 6-1) and Aziza Aubin (lost 6-0, 6-1) battled but came up short at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.
UT Martin could not find any more luck in doubles as its No. 1 duo of Campbell/Streif and No. 2 tandem of Niedzialowski/Ariadna Ondo each fell by a 6-1 margin. Albersmeier and Sakurai's matchup in the No. 3 position went unfinished after the Cougars clinched the point.
The Skyhawks wrap up the 2020-21 season tomorrow when it pays a visit to Saint Louis for a nonconference tilt that will begin at 10 a.m.
