CHARLESTON, Ill. – Aziza Aubin came through for a clutch comeback victory in singles this afternoon to give the University of Tennessee at Martin tennis squad its second win in a row, defeating Eastern Illinois by a 4-3 margin at Darling Courts.
The match was even at 3-all and came down to the No. 3 singles matchup between Aubin and the Panthers' Christine Gouws. After Gouws managed a 4-6 win in the first set, Aubin dug deep for a 6-4 victory in the second set, forcing a tiebreaker. The Sussex, England native continued that momentum into the third set, earning a 6-4 triumph and giving the Skyhawks their first win in Charleston since April 5, 2014.
It was Eastern Illinois who gained the early advantage after taking the doubles point. Amelia Campbell and Jule Streif found success with a 6-2 victory out of the No. 1 slot but Jillian Niedzialowski/Ariadna Ondo fell 6-0 at No. 2 and Sina Albersmeier/Mizuki Sakurai were narrowly defeated 7-6 (5) at No. 3.
UT Martin bounced back early in singles, winning the first three decisions. Albersmeier won by retirement after a 6-4 win in the opening set at No. 4. Sakurai added a 6-2, 6-0 triumph at No. 5 while Niedzialowski stayed hot with a 6-1, 6-4 victory in the No. 6 position.
After Campbell fell 6-3, 7-5 at No. 1 and Streif barely fell 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 at No. 2, the match was tied, setting up Aubin's heroics. The sophomore halted the Panthers' comeback attempt with her third Ohio Valley Conference singles head-to-head victory of the 2020-21 campaign.
The Skyhawks put the finishing touches on its OVC schedule tomorrow when they travel to SIUE for a 12 p.m. matchup.
