DANBURY, Conn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian program accounted for two of the four Eastern College Athletic Conference Rider of the Week accolades, as the league announced Haley Kane as the flat recipient and Devon Woods as the honoree in horsemanship.
This marks the third and fourth ECAC weekly recipients for the Skyhawk program this season, as Bailey Newlin also tabbed horsemanship accolades on Feb. 15 and Julia Gilman earned fences honors on Feb. 1. Hannah McDonald was also named ECAC Horsemanship Rider of the Month for February.
Kane picks up her first career ECAC award after an MOP performance last Saturday at Delaware State. She recorded a score of 87 points, defeating her counterpart Jordan Wicklund by seven points. It marked the first victory of the season and second in the young career of the sophomore out of Lexington, Ky.
On the season, Kane leads UT Martin with an 88.5 scoring average in flat. She generated a career-high score of 90 points at No. 5 SMU on Jan. 30.
Hailing from Escondido, Calif., Woods came away with her team-best third horsemanship win of the 2020-21 campaign after recording a career-high 79.5 points at Delaware State last Saturday. It was also good enough for her first MOP accolade of the season as the senior topped her opponent Sierra Kane by a narrow 0.5 points.
Woods now has a pair of ECAC Horsemanship Rider of the Week honors attached to her name as she also won the award on Oct. 15, 2019.
The Skyhawks close out the 2020-21 regular season this Friday, March 12 when they host Delaware State at 10 a.m. at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Pavilion.
