MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team will welcome Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State to Skyhawk Field on Tuesday night for a battle of unbeaten teams atop the league standings for a twilight matchup. Action is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (2-0-0) swept the first week of matchups with shutout victories over Eastern Illinois and Belmont. In the win over Eastern Illinois, the Skyhawks dictated the pace and tempo, outshooting the Panthers by 14 and finding the game-winning goal by freshman Emely van der Vliet off an assist by Hendrikje Baurmann in the 31st minute. Then on Friday night against Belmont, the defensive unit was absolutely dominant by holding the defending OVC tournament champions to just three shots and zero shots on goal before Skylar Boes found the game-winner in the 75th minute off assists from van der Vliet and Baurmann.
Senior Erica Myers was reward for the team's impressive play by being named OVC Goalkeeper of the Week for the fourth time in her career. Myers tallied a pair of shutouts while recording three saves and posting a perfect 1.000 save percentage for the week.
UT Martin head coach Phil McNamara reached a career milestone of his own in the win over Belmont, picking up his 100th career victory at UT Martin. McNamara boasts a 100-81-20 mark in his 11th season at the helm of the Skyhawks and 260-127-27 overall.
Murray State (2-0-0) proved it was the best OVC program in the state of Kentucky on the opening week of the season by sweeping Morehead State (3-1) and Eastern Kentucky (3-2). The high-scoring Racers have four players who have scored goals on the season while Rebecca Kubin (two goals, one assist) and Chloe Barnthouse (two goals) rank as the team's top offensive threats. In goal, Jenna Villacres is 2-0 with a 1.50 GAA and seven saves.
This marks the 24th meeting between the two programs in series history with Murray State holding a 15-5-3 advantage. The Racers have won six of the last seven meetings with the Skyhawks lone victory during that span coming at home back on Oct. 5, 2018 by a score of 3-1.
