NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Skylar Boes struck for the first goal of her University of Tennessee at Martin career and the Skyhawk defense blanked the host Belmont Bruins for a 1-0 soccer victory at ES Rose Park.
With the win, UT Martin improves to 2-0 to start the season for only the third time in school history (first time since the 2014 campaign). In addition to the team accomplishment, the win marked the 100th career victory at UT Martin for head coach Phil McNamara - bringing his mark at the program to 100-81-20 through parts of 11 seasons.
In a rematch of the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference tournament, the Skyhawks outshot Belmont by a 15-3 margin – placing over half (eight) of their attempts on goal. On the flipside, the remarkable UT Martin defense held the Bruins without a shot on goal en route to its second shutout of the young season. As a result, Erica Myers notched her 26th career victory in goal.
Boes' clutch goal came at the right time for the Skyhawks, finding the back of the net in the 75th minute. Emely van der Vliet and Hendrikje Baurmann were each credited with an assist on the play. Van der Vliet (team-best five shots, two shots on goal) and Alice Adams (tied for team-high with a pair of shots on goal) applied pressure on Bruin goalkeeper Sarah Doyle throughout the evening.
Bella Roberts (19th minute), Lotte Koot (24th minute), van der Vliet (28th minute) and Adams (33rd minute) were each responsible for shots on goal in the first half.
Meanwhile, the UT Martin defense was off the charts in the opening 45 minutes, not allowing Belmont to take a single shot.
Van der Vliet attempted another shot on goal in the 56th minute before Maria Castaldo sent a shot on target a little under four minutes later but Doyle was there for the save to keep the scoreless tie.
After Boes became the hero with her goal, UT Martin's defense took it from there. Belmont was unable to find a rhythm as the Bruins could only manage one shot attempt for the rest of the match and it was wide in the 86th minute.
The Skyhawks put their undefeated record on the line on Tuesday, March 9 when they return home to face the Murray State Racers at 7 p.m.
