NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team came so close to capturing an impressive Ohio Valley Conference road victory this afternoon but the Skyhawks were edged out by Belmont, 4-3.
Things got started on the right foot for UT Martin, who swept the doubles point. The team of Mizuki Sakurai and Sina Albersmeier came away with a 6-2 victory out of the No. 3 slot before the Skyhawks' No. 1 pairing of Amelia Campbell and Jule Streif posted an identical 6-2 win. At No. 2, Ariadna Ondo and Jillian Niedzialowski teamed up for the first time all season and were ahead 5-3 before the doubles point was clinched.
In singles, Aziza Aubin came away with a 7-5, 6-0 triumph at No. 3 while Albersmeier gutted her way through a remarkable 7-5, 2-6, 10-6 marathon victory in the No. 4 slot.
However, the host Bruins would claim the remaining four singles decisions. Campbell was forced to retire early at No. 1, falling 7-5, 4-1. At No. 2, Streif was defeated by a 6-0, 6-4 margin while Sakurai (6-4, 6-3) and Ondo (6-3, 6-1) fell at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
