
UT MARTIN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL OPENS OVC BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP AGAINST EASTERN ILLINOIS

The top seeded University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will open up play in the Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Championship presented by Kentucky Wild with a quarterfinal matchup against eighth seeded Eastern Illinois on Wednesday, March 3. Tipoff from the Ford Center is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (18-4, 17-2 OVC) clinched the program's seventh league title this season. This title joins other championship campaigns in 1998-99, 2011-12, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2019-20. With the team's sixth regular season title since 2011-12, UT Martin is the most decorated program in the OVC this decade.
UT Martin is 19-8 in the Kevin McMillan era at the OVC Basketball Championship. The Skyhawks have won 10 OVC championship under the direction of the 2021 OVC Coach of the Year including six regular season titles (2011-12, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16, 2019-20, 2020-21) and four OVC tournament crowns (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014). His 10 titles lead all active OVC basketball coaches - men or women - by five.
As the postseason honors were handed out, UT Martin boasted OVC Player of the Year and All-OVC first team selection Chelsey Perry while fellow forward Dasia Young also garnered All-OVC first team honors of her own. Perry finished the regular season averaging 23.8 ppg and 7.4 rpg while tallying 27 blocks and 18 steals. Young is coming off a career-high 30-point performance against Eastern Illinois her last time out while averaging 12.2 points and 5.8 rebounds on the season.
Eastern Illinois (11-14, 9-11 OVC) enters the tournament looking to avenge a pair of regular season losses – including letting an 18-point lead slip away on Saturday afternoon to the Skyhawks. The Panthers feature two All-OVC honorees in first team selection Abby Wahl (14.3 ppg, 7.4 rpg) and second-teamer Lariah Washington (14.2 ppg, 4.7 rpg).
This marks the 59th meeting between the two programs with UT Martin holding a 38-20 advantage. The Skyhawks have won 17 of the last 20 meetings – including both contest this season. The two teams met in last year's OVC Basketball Championship semifinals with the Skyhawks scratching out a 63-52 victory.
