DANBURY, Conn. – The Eastern College Athletic Conference unveiled its first Rider of the Week honors of the 2020-21 campaign today as the University of Tennessee at Martin sophomore Julia Gilman claimed the award in fences.
Hailing from Barrington, Ill., Gilman shined during the Skyhawks' opening week of competition as UT Martin traveled to No. 8 TCU on Jan. 28, faced South Dakota State on Jan. 30 and competed at No. 5 SMU on Jan. 30.
Gilman notched a pair of victories, accounting for two of the Skyhawks' four wins in the fences event. She dialed up a career-high 82 points against South Dakota State and followed that with an 81-point effort against SMU, claiming head-to-head victories against both opponents. She was also successful in the season debut at TCU, as she also compiled a career-best 82 points for a tie.
Of the five UT Martin riders who took part in fences during the first week of the season, Gilman's 81.7 was the best scoring average. Today's announcement marks the first ECAC weekly accolade in her young career.
The Skyhawks return to action on Feb. 12 when it hosts Minnesota-Crookston for the first home meet of the 2020-21 campaign.
