CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The University of Tennessee at Martin track and field program lived up to the Show Me State motto on Friday evening at the Redhawks Invite in Cape Girardeau, Mo. with an impressive showcase in its second meet of the young indoor season.
The Skyhawks boasted 31 top eight finishes on the day including a pair of school records by freshman Darius Holland and sophomore Brady Fry. Along with the school records, Holland and fellow freshman Hawken Foote posted individual titles to highlight an impressive evening overall.
After setting a program record in his collegiate debut, Holland bested that record once again in his second collegiate performance. With a long jump of 7.10m, he surpassed his previous PR of 7.03m set at the KMS Invitational to rewrite the record book and win the individual event.
UT Martin's second individual title came in the men's 400m dash as Foote posted a PR with a time of 54.20 seconds to claim the title – the first of his career.
Keeping with the theme of freshman performers, Ghynaia Morgan made great strides in the women's long jump with a distance of 4.80m in the finals. She also had a nice showing in the women's 55m dash with a finals time of 7.95 seconds.
In the mid-distance, Jhon-Wes Walker just missed out on an individual title of his own, finishing runner-up in the men's 800m run with a time of 2:01.21 in the finals.
In the next event, the Skyhawks set their second school record of the day as Fry notched his named next to his third program mark. Fry was strong in the 55m hurdles, posting a time of 7.99 seconds to stake his claim.
UT Martin will return to action on Friday, Feb. 19 when competing at the EIU Friday Night in Charleston, Ill.
