MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad will go for a season split against Jacksonville State when it hosts the Ohio Valley Conference rival at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center on Thursday, Feb. 4. Tipoff time is set for 8 p.m., following the conclusion of the front end of the doubleheader with the women's basketball team.
These two teams met back on Dec. 30 as the Gamecocks claimed an 80-70 win on their home floor. In that game, Cameron Holden went off for game-highs of 23 points and 11 rebounds for the Skyhawks while Anthony Thomas (15 points) and La-Quiem Walker (career-best 10 points in just 16 minutes) also paced a UT Martin squad that committed only eight turnovers.
This matchup features two of the OVC's best teams from the charity stripe. The Skyhawks are making a bid to lead the league in free throw percentage for the third consecutive season, currently topping the OVC in that category at 74.2 percent. Meanwhile, Jacksonville State has knocked down 74.3 percent of its free throw tries in league play, which was the best mark of any team in the conference entering this week.
UT Martin (5-10, 3-8 OVC) is coming off its first setback of its season-long six-game homestand, falling 76-60 to SIUE last Saturday. Thomas accumulated a career-best 24 points while Jaron Williams contributed 13 points for the Skyhawks.
Recently, UT Martin has received a lift on the glass out of Ajani Kennedy. The 6-9, 225-pound redshirt junior has led the Skyhawks in rebounding in each of the last three contests, including a career-best 14 boards against Eastern Illinois last Thursday.
The Gamecocks (10-7, 6-5 OVC) were involved in an overtime nailbiter on Tuesday, dropping an 86-82 decision to Eastern Kentucky at home. Kayne Henry tossed in a season-high 22 points for Jacksonville State, who came all the way back from a 16-point deficit to lead late in regulation before a Colonel three-pointer forced overtime.
Chris Brinkley will provide the call live on ESPN+ and locally on WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links, plus a link for live stats, can be found at the top of the webpage.
