The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will face one final test prior to next week's Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Championship with the squad's regular season finale against Eastern Illinois on Saturday, Feb. 27. Tipoff from Lantz Arena is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (17-4, 16-2 OVC) clinched the program's seventh league title and sixth under head coach Kevin McMillan. This title joins other championship campaigns in 1998-99, 2011-12, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2019-20. With the team's sixth regular season title since 2011-12, UT Martin is the most decorated program in the OVC this decade.
UT Martin has tied their program record for most OVC wins in a season with 16 – matching its 2014-15 (16-0) and 2019-20 (16-2) squads. The team also enters Saturday's contest riding a six-game road winning streak which ranks as the longest since the 2014-15 season when the Skyhawks strung together seven straight games from Jan. 3 - Feb. 25, 2015.
With 6:54 to play in the third quarter against SIUE, senior forward Maddie Waldrop scored her 1,000th career point becoming just the 17th player in program history to join the decorated list. Currently with 1,006 career points, Waldrop finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds to record her 14th career double-double.
Eastern Illinois (11-13, 9-10 OVC) clinched the eighth seed in next week's OVC Basketball Championship on Thursday with a 65-57 victory over Southeast Missouri. The Panthers feature three All-OVC caliber performers in Abby Wahl (14.6 ppg, 7.4 rpg), Lariah Washington (14.1 ppg, 4.8 rpg) and Karle Pace (12.8 ppg) while Kira Arthofer leads the league with 4.7 assists per game.
Saturday's matchup marks the 58th meeting between the two programs in a series dating to 1975. UT Martin holds a 37-20 advantage in the series while winning 16 of the last 19 meetings. Eastern Illinois has done a nice job protecting its home court however, winning three of the last four matchups in Charleston.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ while Chris Brinkley will be on the call locally on WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links - in addition to a link for live stats - can be found at the top of the webpage.
