MARTIN, Tenn. – Nearly a full year has passed since the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team officially hit the links but that will all change on March 1-2 as the Skyhawks will take part in the Gulf Coast Collegiate, co-hosted by New Orleans and Nicholls State at Diamondhead Country Club in Bay St. Louis, Miss.
This marks the second consecutive year that the Skyhawks have competed in the Gulf Coast Collegiate, as UT Martin finished fourth in the same tournament last spring. The season-opening tournament is one of a half-dozen events on the Skyhawks' 2020-21 schedule as UT Martin will also travel to the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate (Sevierville, Tenn.), Twin Oaks Intercollegiate (Springfield, Mo.), National Intercollegiate (Lake Oconee, Ga.), Murray State Intercollegiate (Dickson, Tenn.) and TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate (Old Hickory, Tenn.) before the 2021 Ohio Valley Conference Championships at Muscle Shoals, Ala. on April 25-27.
The Skyhawks are one of the OVC's preseason favorites after returning nine players from last year's squad that won five tournaments and finished as runner-up in two others. UT Martin placed three players on the All-OVC list for the first time in school history in Jack Story, Ross Redmont and Nick Wolf. Jacob Uehlein became the fourth Skyhawk to earn a postseason accolade when he was named an All-OVC Newcomer.
The Gulf Coast Collegiate will also mark the head coaching debut of Austin Swafford, who officially took over as the third coach in program history on July 1, 2020. The UT Martin alum followed an All-OVC career as an assistant for three years under Jerry Carpenter, who retired at the end of the 2019-20 campaign but remains on the coaching staff as a volunteer assistant.
The Skyhawks, who next week will be competing as a team for the first time since winning the Grover Page Classic on March 9-10, 2020, boast an impressive roster that consists of four seniors, two juniors, three sophomores and three freshmen.
Last season, UT Martin led the OVC with a 286.2 team scoring average. Story (71.0), Redmont (71.9), Wolf (72.3), Tate Chumley (72.7) and Mason Chandler (73.1) all found themselves in the top-20 in the league in scoring average.
Story brought home a pair of medalist finishes (Murray State Invitational, F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate), won OVC Golfer of the Week status three times and became the first Skyhawk to rack up the OVC Golfer of the Month award in 2019-20. He owns the most collegiate top-20 finishes (22) out of any current UT Martin golfer.
A two-time All-OVC honoree, Redmont placed in the top-six in four different tournaments last season as he is responsible for the most top-five finishes (eight) and top-10 finishes (13) on the Skyhawk roster. His 73.2 career scoring average is tied with Wolf for the best on the squad as the Murfreesboro, Tenn. native – also a two-time All-OVC recipient – has produced four top-five's, seven top-10's and 17 top-20's in his collegiate career.
Chumley accounts for a 73.6 career scoring average and has 14 top-20 finishes at UT Martin (including three top-five's and six top-10's). Both of Chandler's career top-10's came last in 2019-20 as he trimmed more than two strokes off his scoring average from the year before.
Uehlein heads the three-man sophomore class as he garnered three top-20 finishes on his way to a 74.1 stroke average as a rookie. Bryson Morrell (75.1 scoring average, a third-place finish at the 2020 version of the Grover Page Classic) and Luke Smith (77.1 scoring average) additionally will push for playing time.
Also returning is senior Peyton Dix, who was granted a medical redshirt in 2019-20 but posted a 75.3 stroke average while taking part in 14 rounds as a member of the Skyhawk scoring lineup in 2018-19.
Swafford has also liked what he has seen out of UT Martin's freshman class. Ethan Ray (Collierville), Jackson Twerdahl (Nolensville) and Jonathan Xoinis (Chattanooga Christian) each had decorated prep careers and will vie for immediate contributions to the Skyhawk lineup.
For the Gulf Coast Collegiate, Swafford is going with a lineup that includes Redmont, Wolf, Chumley, Chandler and Story. Last season, Redmont (sixth), Story (11th), Wolf (11th) and Chumley (19th) all finished in the top-20 of the field in the tournament.
