MARTIN, Tenn. – After an impressive team victory to start the season, the University of Tennessee at Martin men's cross country team has been ranked 11th in the NCAA South region by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Week 4 rankings.
The Skyhawks sit 11th in the South region behind Ole Miss, Georgia, Tennessee, Lipscomb, Florida State, North Florida, Georgia Tech, Florida, Tennessee Tech and Alabama. The ranking serves as the highest in program history, besting a 12th place designation in 2017.
UT Martin got off to a hot start in the season opener, posting a team victory at the Redhawks Invite back on Jan. 23 against regional competitors Eastern Illinois, Memphis, SIUE and Southeast Missouri. The Skyhawks placed first amongst the five squads with 36 points – including claiming the individual title spearheaded by OVC Runner of the Week Ryan Ford with an 8k time of 24:16.4.
As a team, four of the five Skyhawk scorers posted PRs in the opener with John Green finishing fifth overall with a time of 24:54.7 while Luke McNair posted a top-10 finish with a time of 25:20.4. The pair of Daniel Smith (25:29.7) and Will Oglesby (25:31.8) rounded out the scoring five for the Skyhawks.
UT Martin will return to action this weekend in a loaded field at the FSU Winter Cross Country Classic in Tallahassee, Fla. The Skyhawk men will compete in the Garnet race scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. local time.
