2/10/2021 7:16:00 PM | Women's Basketball
The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will hit the road for the first time in nearly three weeks with a matchup at in-state Ohio Valley Conference foe Austin Peay on Thursday, Feb. 11. Tipoff from the Dunn Center is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The game which was originally scheduled for 4:30 p.m. has been pushed back to 6 p.m. due to the potential for inclement weather.
The Skyhawks (12-4, 11-2 OVC) return to action after a tough two week stretch which saw the team play six games in 11 days, posting five victories. Included in the stretch, UT Martin would string together a 10-game winning streak before suffering a 77-73 loss to Tennessee Tech in its last contest on Saturday afternoon.
UT Martin sits atop the OVC standings with an 11-2 mark and a .846 winning percentage while sitting a full game ahead of second place Austin Peay (8-3) in the loss column. The Skyhawks enter Thursday's contest ranked first amongst league leaders in scoring offense (71.4 ppg), field goal percentage (46.8), field goal percentage defense (35.5), assists (17.8) and assist/turnovers ratio (1.3).
The Skyhawks boast the reigning OVC Player of the Week for the sixth time this season after sophomore Dasia Young claimed her first weekly honor. Young averaged 17.7 points and 9.3 rebounds per game while shooting 55.6 percent from the floor and 76.5 percent from the free throw stripe in three contests. In her most recent outing, she scored 17 points and nine rebounds against Tennessee Tech. Also posting a nice afternoon last time out was senior Maddie Waldrop who scored a season-high 22 points and eight boards. Waldrop will look to continue her recent success against the Govs after scoring 21 points last month while posting a dominant double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds in her last visit to the Dunn Center in 2020.
Austin Peay (10-5, 8-3 OVC) enters the contest riding a three-game winning streak – including a 58-45 win over Tennessee State on Tuesday afternoon coming off a 15-day layoff. Down to just eight players in their most recent outing, the Governors placed three players in double figures as Shay-Lee Kirby led the team with 13 points off the bench while Tahanee Bennell recorded her first career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds along with seven assists. Brianah Ferby also scored 11 points.
Thursday's contest marks the 93rd meeting between the two programs in a series dating back to 1970 and sits tied at 46-46. UT Martin has controlled the series in recent history by winning six consecutive contests while picking up 19 of the last 23 games overall – including a 69-53 victory back on Jan. 14 in Martin.
