12/4/2021 11:13:00 AM | Women's Basketball
The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team opens a three-game homestand on Sunday, Dec. 5 when playing host to Atlantic 10 foe Saint Louis. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (3-4) are coming off a tough appearance at the San Juan Shootout where they squared off against George Washington (L, 46-37) and nationally ranked Virginia Tech (L, 54-49) but ultimately dropped both contests. Despite the two decisions, UT Martin posted gritty defense in both outings, allowing their opponents to shoot an average of 34.2 percent from the floor and holding them to 50.0 points per game. This season, the Skyhawks boast a scoring defense of 49.3 points per game which ranks ninth nationally.
UT Martin is led by junior Paige Pipkin with 12.1 points per game while tallying 4.7 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game. Meanwhile, graduate forward Holly Forbes ranks as the team's other double-digit contributor averaging 10.6 points and 6.6 rebounds per game while freshman wing Hayley Harrison sit just outside double figures with 9.0 points per game.
The Skyhawks are hoping to lean heavily on their home court success over the year during the homestand. Since 2009, the Skyhawks have posted a 126-26 record in the Elam Center – including a 35-14 mark against non-conference opponents.
Saint Louis (2-5) snapped a four-game losing streak on Friday night with a dominating road victory at Southeast Missouri by a score of 83-54. The Billikens have played a difficult schedule which featured three Power 5 opponents in Missouri, Kansas and Florida along with mid-major powerhouse Florida Gulf Coast. SLU boasts two players in double figures including Ciaja Harbison (16.4 ppg, 2.3 apg) and Brooke Flowers (12.1 ppg, 12.1 rpg).
Sunday's contest marks the 12th meeting between the two programs with UT Martin holding a 7-4 advantage in a series which dates back to 1993. The Skyhawks have won four of five games played in the Elam Center against the Billikens, including their last matchup in Martin back on Dec. 6, 2010.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Eddie Suiter (analyst) calling the action. Fans can also tune into WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM for the radio broadcast. Those links – in addition to live stats – can be found at the top of the page.
