UT MARTIN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL WELCOMES REGIONAL RIVAL SIU TO TOWN ON WEDNESDAY
12/14/2021 3:51:00 PM | Women's Basketball
The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will play its final game in the friendly confines of the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center this calendar year when welcoming regional rival Southern Illinois for a midweek matchup on Wednesday, Dec. 15. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. as admission is waived for all fans who make a donation to aid the nearby communities affected by the recent tornado.
Wednesday's matchup marks the 22nd meeting between the two programs in a series which dates back to 1973 with UT Martin holding a narrow 11-10 advantage. The Skyhawks possess a 5-3 record in games played at home against the Salukis while posting a 6-3 overall mark in nine games under the direction of head coach Kevin McMillan.
The Skyhawks (3-6) are looking to snap a lengthy four-game losing streak which ranks as the team's longest slide since the 2016-17 season. During the streak UT Martin has dropped three of the four games by single digits before suffering a 54-37 loss at the hands of Southeastern Conference foe Mississippi State on Sunday afternoon.
Despite the team's offensive shortcomings of late, UT Martin has found its calling on the defensive end of the floor. The Skyhawks rank 14th nationally and first in the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring defense by allowing just 50.9 points per game. Meanwhile, the squad has held six of nine opponents below 37.0 percentage from the floor.
UT Martin features two players who score in double figures on a nightly basis led by Paige Pipkin with 11.5 points per game while Holly Forbes is close behind with 10.1 points and 6.1 rebounds per night. Freshman wing Hayley Harrison (9.2 ppg) has also proven to be a consistent contributor by leading the team in scoring three times this season – including a team-high 13 points and seven rebounds against Mississippi State.
Southern Illinois (3-3) is looking to build off a 25-point win over Quincy on Sunday afternoon which marked the 400th career victory for head coach Cincy Stein in her final season. The Salukis feature a pair of veteran stars in Abby Brockmeyer (18.0 ppg, 11.3 rpg) and Makenzie Silvey (13.2 ppg) who have each eclipsed 100 career starts. Meanwhile, graduate forward Gabby Walker (11.7 ppg) joins both Brockmeyer and Silvey as a trio of 1,000-point scorers.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Eddie Suiter (analyst) calling the action. Fans can also tune into WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM for the radio broadcast. Those links – in addition to live stats – can be found at the top of the page.
