The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team continues its current homestand by playing host to Southeastern Conference foe Mississippi State on Sunday, Dec. 12. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (3-5) enter the contest riding a three-game losing streak after dropping three single-digit matchups to George Washington, No. 24 Virginia Tech and Saint Louis in the past two weeks. In the team's most recent contest against Saint Louis last Sunday, UT Martin went back and forth in a game which featured four lead changes and saw the score become tied three times before ultimately dropping the contest by a final score of 59-54. Graduate forward Holly Forbes scored a game-high 17 points while Kyannah Grant also scored in double figures with 10 points while tallying team-highs with six rebounds and four assists.
UT Martin will rely heavily on its team defense against Mississippi State which possesses a high-powered scoring offense. This season the Skyhawks have limited four of their eight opponents below 50 points while ranking 13th nationally and first in the OVC in scoring defense, allowing an average of 50.5 points per game.
Junior Paige Pipkin leads the team offensively with 12.1 points per game while tallying 4.7 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game. She has paced the squad in scoring in half of the team's contests while Forbes – a two-time OVC Newcomer of the Week selection – ranks as another top contributor, averaging 11.4 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.
Mississippi State (6-2) brings a potent offensive attack into the Elam Center despite dropping two of its last three games to Power 5 foes Michigan and Oklahoma. Meanwhile against opponents outside of the five major conferences, the Bulldogs have had their way by posting an average margin of victory of 27.6 points in their six victories. Rickea Jackson leads the group with 21.9 points per game along with 6.9 rebounds while Jerkaila Jordan (16.1 ppg, 5.6 rpg) and Anastasia Hayes (15.1 ppg, 5.1 rpg) rounds out the three starters in double figures.
Sunday's matchup marks the seventh meeting between the two programs in a series which dates back to 1980. Mississippi State has won each of the previous six matchups, including its last trip to the Elam Center on Dec. 16, 2003 – a game in which the Bulldogs won 94-61.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Eddie Suiter (analyst) calling the action. Fans can also tune into WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM for the radio broadcast. Those links – in addition to live stats – can be found at the top of the page.
