UT MARTIN MEN'S HOOPS WRAPS UP THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER WITH A SATURDAY AFTERNOON VISIT TO WESTERN KENTUCKY
11/26/2021 8:38:00 AM | Men's Basketball
MARTIN, Tenn. – The first of three consecutive road games for the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad starts with a Saturday, Nov. 27 showdown against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers at EA Diddle Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
This will be the Skyhawks' second of four matchups against Conference USA teams in 2021-22 as UT Martin narrowly fell 75-67 at Florida Atlantic on Nov. 19. The Skyhawks also have a home-and-home series scheduled with Middle Tennessee over the next two weeks (in Murfreesboro on Dec. 1, in Martin on Dec. 11).
UT Martin (3-3) is coming off a 103-43 dismantling of Carver College on Wednesday, seeing six players score in double figures. Darius Simmons' game-high 18 points paved the way while KJ Simon (16), KK Curry (16), Bernie Andre (13), Josiah Morris (12) and Chris Nix (10) also provided double-digit scoring outputs for the Skyhawks, who divvied out 30 assists (most in a single game since Dec. 10, 2017) and led for nearly 38 minutes of clock time.
Key ingredients for UT Martin so far this season have been a stingy defense and a relentless effort on the glass. The Skyhawks lead the Ohio Valley Conference with a .391 defensive field goal percentage, limiting the opposition to a miniscule 25.8 percent shooting from three-point range (33-of-128) over the last five games. UT Martin also tops the OVC in rebounding (41.3 caroms per contest), thanks in large part to six different Skyhawks who haul in at least 5.0 rebounds per outing.
Western Kentucky (2-3) opened a five-game homestand with an 88-62 triumph over Alabama A&M on Wednesday. In that game, the Hilltoppers shot a blazing 69.2 percent (18-of-26, including eight trifectas) in the first half to win going away. Sherman Brashear's career-best 18 points off the bench and 7-foot-5 center Jamarion Sharp's triple-double (10 points, 12 rebounds, school-record 10 blocks) in his first start of the 2021-22 campaign guided Western Kentucky.
