WACO, Texas – The National Collegiate Equestrian Association unveiled its final rankings of the fall season this afternoon and the University of Tennessee at Martin is slotted in the ninth position.
Oklahoma State is ranked first and is followed by No. 2 Texas A&M, No. 3 Auburn, No. 4 Baylor, No. 5 Georgia, No. 6 SMU, No. 7 Delaware State, No. 8 Fresno State, No. 9 UT Martin and No. 10 TCU.
The Skyhawks began the 2021-22 campaign ranked 10th in the Sept. 14 preseason poll but fell out of poll when the midseason rankings were released on Nov. 3. However, UT Martin bounced back during the final portion of the fall schedule to find itself with the school's highest ranking since Nov. 12, 2019.
Up against a daunting slate that included three top-eight squads, the Skyhawks wrapped up the fall with a 3-3 overall record. UT Martin defeated then-No. 3 SMU (9-6 on Oct. 2), South Dakota State (10-8 on Oct. 15) and Lynchburg (8-2 on Nov. 13) for its three victories.
Individually, the Skyhawks have piled up 47 head-to-head victories and 13 MOP performances so far this season. UT Martin's Jumping Seat riders have combined for 33 of those individual wins while the Skyhawks boast four MOP winners apiece in three of the four events (fences, flat and reining).
Additionally, five UT Martin representatives have nabbed seven total Eastern College Athletic Conference Rider of the Week during the early portion of the 2021-22 campaign. Kelby Kane (fences) and Kate Davis (horsemanship and reining) have each won the award twice while the trio of Julia Gilman (flat), Tyler Anderson (flat) and Logan Putvinski (reining) have also claimed top ECAC weekly honors for the Skyhawks.
UT Martin will be tested early during its spring schedule, starting off with three meets against ranked opponents in the span of 72 hours. The No. 9 Skyhawks will take on No. 6 SMU and No. 7 Delaware State on Jan. 27-28 in Dallas, Texas before heading west to Fort Worth for a Jan. 29 matchup against No. 10 TCU.
