**Jason Simpson's Weekly Press Conference is below**
Fresh off clinching the program's second Ohio Valley Conference championship and first since 2006, the No. 8 ranked University of Tennessee at Martin football team will look to close out the regular season strong with a road matchup at league rival Southeast Missouri on Saturday, Nov. 20. Kickoff from Houck Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (9-1, 5-0 OVC) enter the contest riding a program-record nine-game winning streak which ranks as the second-longest active streak in FCS – trailing only defending national champion Sam Houston. UT Martin is one of just five teams nationally to boast a perfect record against FCS opponents while becoming the fourth team in program history to reach the nine-win plateau – joining fellow historic teams from 1967, 1988 and 2006. After clinching the OVC league title last week, the Skyhawks can accomplish one more piece of history with a win as no team in the program's Division I history has posted an undefeated conference slate.
In the team's most recent outing, UT Martin had a notable day on several fronts. With a commanding 42-3 road victory at Tennessee Tech, the Skyhawks not only clinched the program's first league crown in 15 years and its second FCS Playoff berth but also swept the Sgt. York Trophy series to bring the traveling trophy back to west Tennessee. The Skyhawks tallied a season-high 313 rushing yards while holding their first opponent without a touchdown since shutting out the Golden Eagles in 2017.
UT Martin currently ranks first in the OVC in 18 team categories while its players sit in the top-five in 28 various individual categories. The Skyhawks sit atop categories such as both scoring offense (33.7 ppg) and scoring defense (23.7 ppg) while also commanding the ground attack on each side of the ball by sitting first in rushing offense (237.9 ypg) and rushing defense (121.8 ypg). Individually, the Skyhawks boast three of the league's top rushing threats in Peyton Logan (93.2 ypg), Zak Wallace (63.3 ypg) and Keon Howard (47.2 ypg) while Wallace ranks eighth nationally with 13 rushing touchdowns and Howard paces the league with 150 points responsible for.
UT Martin head coach Jason Simpson is approaching a career milestone with his next victory. Simpson enters the contest with 99 career wins in 16 seasons to sit in a tie for fourth on the OVC's all-time wins list with former Western Kentucky coach Jimmy Feix while his 76 career league victories rank third.
Southeast Missouri (3-7, 3-2 OVC) suffered a disappointing 28-10 loss to Murray State last weekend after winning three of its previous four league matchups early in the slate to thwart a potential championship bid. The Redhawks are led by one of the most dynamic running backs in the country in Geno Hess who leads the OVC and ranks fifth nationally in both rushing yards (1,116) and rushing touchdowns (14).
Saturday's contest marks the 38th meeting between the two programs with UT Martin holding a narrow 19-18 advantage. The Skyhawks have had success in Cape Girardeau under the direction of Simpson, winning six of the last eight road contests since 2006. The two teams met earlier this season back on Oct. 23 in Martin for a contest which did not count in the league standings and resulted in the Skyhawks earning a 38-30 victory.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Erik Sean (play-by-play) and Rick Wieser (analyst) calling the action. Fans can also tune into WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM to hear John Hatler (play-by-play) and Andy Collins (analyst) for the radio broadcast.
