JACKSON, Tenn. – The first 36 holes of the Grover Page Classic showed off the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team's dominance of Jackson Country Club as the Skyhawks claim a nine-shot lead going into tomorrow's final round.
UT Martin tallied a 282 (-6) to lead by four strokes after Round 1 and whittled five more shots off that total in Round 2, carding a remarkable 277 (-11). Heading into the final 18 holes, the Skyhawks (559, -17) are clear of second-place Tennessee Tech (568, -8) by nine strokes and third-place New Orleans (569, -7) by 10 shots as there are just three squads under par for the tournament.
As a team, UT Martin leads the 16-team field in par-3 scoring (2.93, -3) and holds a share of the lead in birdies (46). The Skyhawks rank second in par-4 scoring (4.08, +8), second in par-5 scoring (4.53, -19) and third in eagles (two). This afternoon's 277 is tied for the program's lowest score in a round in the 18-year history of the Grover Page Classic event while 17-under is the best for any UT Martin team in the tournament's Jackson Country Club Era.
"I am super proud of the team and their efforts today," Skyhawk head coach Austin Swafford said. "We were able to capitalize on a lot of opportunities when they presented themselves and as a result, we were able to shoot the lowest 36-hole total since the Grover Page Classic has been held at Jackson Country Club. There are a few things we have gone over in hopes of improving during the final round and we are excited to go compete tomorrow."
