1/6/2021 4:57:00 PM | Women's Basketball
The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will return to Ohio Valley Conference action with a road matchup in Music City at Tennessee State on Thursday, Jan. 7. Tipoff from the Gentry Center is scheduled for 5 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
UT Martin is looking to get back in the win column after back-to-back losses to Jacksonville State (72-67) and No. 2 ranked Louisville (96-61) in its last two contests. The Skyhawks have been in a shooting funk in both contests, shooting just 39.4 percent from the field and 26.7 percent from beyond the arc over the last two games.
Senior forward Chelsey Perry garnered yet another prestigious honor by being named to the midseason watch list for the 2021 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award. The 2020 OVC Player of the Year ranks third nationally with 26.8 points per game and recently tallied her second straight game with a double-double after posting 26 points and 10 rebounds against No. 2 ranked Louisville on Tuesday afternoon. Perry also became the second player in program history to notch 200 career blocks and needs three more rejections to tie the program record of 203 held by Mary Kate Long.
The coaching matchup pits two head coaches on opposite ends of the OVC leaderboard. UT Martin head coach Kevin McMillan serves as the OVC's active wins leader with 220 wins while Tennessee State's first-year head coach Ty Evans is looking for his first career victory at the helm of the Lady Tigers.
Tennessee State (0-5, 0-3 OVC) continues a return to play which features its third game in five days after a lengthy 21-day layoff. The Lady Tigers dropped their most recent outings to Southeast Missouri (84-50) and Austin Peay (62-37). TSU is averaging 53.2 points per game while shooting 32.2 percent from the field and 19.2 percent from the beyond the arc.
The Lady Tigers are led offensively by senior guard Taylor Roberts with 17.7 points per game. Fellow seniors Andreana Wrister (15.2 ppg, 3.2 rpg) and Jaden Wrightsell (10.4 ppg, 9.6 rpg) round out the Lady Tigers in double figures.
Thursday's contest marks the 65th meeting between the two programs in a series which dates back to 1979 with UT Martin holding a 36-28 lead. The Skyhawks have won four consecutive meetings against the Lady Tigers while holding a commanding advantage in the series as of late, winning 13 of the last 15 contests.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ while Chris Brinkley will be on the call locally on WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links - in addition to a link for live stats - can be found at the top of the webpage.
