SKYHAWK MEN'S BASKETBALL SQUARES OFF AGAINST DEFENDING OVC CHAMPION MURRAY STATE ON SATURDAY

MARTIN, Tenn. – For the first time in exactly a calendar year, the University of Tennessee at Martin takes on its nearest Ohio Valley Conference rival as the Skyhawks host Murray State at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center on Saturday, Jan. 16. The game, which serves as the backend of a doubleheader, will start at 4 p.m.
UT Martin (3-6, 1-4 OVC) is hoping that the third time is the charm this week as previously scheduled contests for Monday (home against Southeast Missouri) and Thursday (home against Austin Peay) were postponed and rescheduled because of NCAA testing protocols.
Although the Skyhawks are searching for their first win since their OVC opener, UT Martin is coming off an encouraging effort at league-leading Belmont last Saturday. In a game that featured season-highs of five ties and seven lead changes, the Skyhawks traded blows with the undefeated Bruins for most of the contest until an 18-0 run midway through the second half lifted Belmont.
Freshman guard Anthony Thomas shined at Belmont, establishing new career-highs in scoring (21 points), rebounds (6) and steals (2) in just 22 minutes of playing time. In the process, he became the first UT Martin freshman since all-time leading scorer Myles Taylor (24 points against Eastern Illinois on Feb. 11, 2012) to notch at least 20 points against a conference opponent.
Murray State (4-6, 1-4 OVC) enters the game on a four-game slide although three of those defeats came by six points or less. The Racers are searching for their first road win of the season after a 74-68 setback at Eastern Illinois last Saturday. In that game, Murray State led by as many as 13 points in the second half but were hampered by a season-high 23 turnovers.
The Racers currently lead the OVC and rank fifth nationally with a .530 field goal percentage. Murray State also tops the league in rebounding margin (+8.7) and assists (17.1 per contest).
Chris Brinkley will handle play-by-play duties on both ESPN+ and locally on WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM. A link for live stats can also be found at the top of the webpage.
