The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will make its long-awaited return to the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center with its home opener when playing host to Ohio Valley Conference leader Austin Peay on Thursday, Jan. 14. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. and will be broadcast exclusively on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (3-3, 2-1 OVC) return to the Elam Center for the first time in 320 days after playing their first six games on the road. UT Martin looks to lean on its past success on Pat Summitt Court which has seen the squad post a 116-25 record at home since 2010 – including an impressive 82-11 mark against OVC foes.
UT Martin enters the contest looking to build upon its largest victory of the season – an 80-39 road win at Tennessee State last Thursday night. The Skyhawks posted their largest scoring output of the season while equaling its highest single-half scoring total in both halves with 40 points and holding its opponent to fewer than 40 points for just the fifth time in the Kevin McMillan Era.
Skyhawk senior forward Chelsey Perry continued to rack up individual honors along with the team's success, claiming her 11th OVC Player of the Week honor along with being tabbed TSWA Player of the Week after averaging 29.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per game while shooting 61.1 percent from the field. For the year, Perry ranks second nationally with 27.7 points per game while ranking amongst OVC leaders in scoring (first), defensive rebounds (first), three-point percentage (first), field goal percentage (second), minutes played (second), three-pointer field goals (third), rebounding (sixth) and free throw percentage (ninth).
Austin Peay (7-2, 5-0 OVC) enters Thursday's contest as the league leader in the standings with a hot five-game winning streak to start OVC play. The Governors have done much of that work on the road, pulling off four road victories in league play by an average margin of victory of 14.2 points per game.
The Governors are led offensive by Maggie Knowles with 14.5 points per game while Brianah Ferby ranks as the team's other top offensive threat with 11.2 points per game. The squad averages 71.2 points per game while holding opponents to just 62.3 points per night.
Thursday's contest marks the 92nd meeting between the two programs with Austin Peay holding a narrow 46-45 advantage in a series which dates back to 1970. UT Martin has controlled the series in recent history by winning five consecutive contests while picking up 18 of the last 22 games overall.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ while Chris Brinkley will be on the call locally on WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links - in addition to a link for live stats - can be found at the top of the webpage.
