SKYHAWK SEASON IN REVIEW: TRACK AND FIELD
5/1/2020 1:37:00 PM | Women's Track and Field
MARTIN, Tenn. – Through the end of the 2019-20 academic year, we will be posting a season recap for each University of Tennessee at Martin athletic program. This edition of the "Skyhawk Season in Review" series features both the men's and women's track and field squads.
The track season was pegged to be one of excitement and optimism as Jolyta Henderson was named the fifth head coach in program history while returning several components from a promising 2019 campaign along with a mixture of talented newcomers.
Leading up to the OVC Indoor Championship held in Birmingham, Ala., the Skyhawks grew stronger ever meet. As a whole, the Skyhawk men posted seven of the top 10 times in the OVC in various categories while the women's squad recorded four of their own.
At the OVC Championships it was a familiar face which stepped up to claim medalist honors as sophomore Brady Fry claimed silver in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.33 seconds after winning an event at the Championship as a freshman. Senior Ryan Ford continued his decorated career by scoring points in both the 3k (8:27.11) and 5k (14:53.38) for the Skyhawks.
The Skyhawks also scored points in the mile (Oisin O'Gailin), men's DMR (Daniel Smith, Corey Smith, Jhon-Wes Walker and Luke McNair) and the men's 4x400m relay (Corey Smith, Colby Martin, Andre Brown and Jhon-Wes Walker) at the OVC Indoor Championship.
The season sadly came to a sudden halt just days prior to the start of the indoor track and field campaign as COVID-19 resulted in the NCAA canceling the ensuing championship events.
Outside of the athletic arena, Fry was named a National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) All-American Strength and Conditioning Athlete of the Year for his performance in the weight room, playing field and classroom. This honor was the first for a Skyhawk in program history.
