MARTIN, Tenn. – Through the end of the 2019-20 academic year, we will be posting a season recap for each University of Tennessee at Martin athletic program. This edition of the "Skyhawk Season in Review" series features the equestrian team.
UT Martin continued its reputation as a top-flight program in 2019-20, as the Skyhawks were ranked in the top-10 of the National Collegiate Equestrian Association polls for 12 combined weeks. Once again, UT Martin faced a stacked schedule that included seven ranked opponents as part of 11 regular season competitions.
In their first season as a member of the Eastern College Athletic Conference, the Skyhawks received several individual accolades from the league office. Four different UT Martin honorees (Tess Baumann, Abbie Hopkins, Kelby Kane, Devon Woods) joined forces to nab 10 ECAC Rider of the Week awards as well as a pair of Rider of the Month accolades.
In addition, Hannah McDonald became just the fourth Skyhawk to ever be named NCEA Rider of the Month when she captured that accolade for February in reining.
Hopkins was the recipient of UT Martin's two biggest postseason awards as the junior from Seekonk, Mass. was named a NCEA Ariat second team All-American in flat as well as ECAC Flat Rider of the Year. She became just the second Skyhawk representative (first since 2013) to collect All-American status in two different events as she also was an All-American in fences in 2018.
On the academic side, UT Martin combined to tally 13 spots on the Farnam NCEA All-Academic Team. Baumann, Jade Bleskey, Lucy Eier, Hopkins, McDonald, Savannah Metheny, Johnie Parker, Kyra Petty, Grace Salmon, Katelyn Schultz and Woods were each spotlighted as Skyhawk recipients.
