After posting the largest margin of victory in Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Championship history, the University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will square off against No. 4 seed Eastern Illinois in the tournament semifinals on Friday, March 6. Tipoff from the Ford Center is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (21-9) ran away with the victory in the quarterfinal matchup against Murray State, posting an 88-33 victory to set the OVC Basketball Championship record for margin of victory (55). With the win, UT Martin advances to the tournament semifinals for the 10th time in the last 11 championships while improving the team's record in tournament play to 18-6 under the direction of head coach Kevin McMillan.
In the win over Murray State, UT Martin saw five different players score in double figures while posting one of the team's top defensive efforts in program history. While shooting 51.5 percent as a team, it was on the defensive end where the Skyhawks limited the Racers to just 20 percent shooting from the field and just 33 points which ranked as the fewest points allowed to an opponent since 1998.
OVC Player of the Year Chelsey Perry paced the team with 21 points and eight rebounds while Demi Burdick scored a career-high with 14 points. Junior point guard Tamiah Stanford stepped up after the loss of Kyannah Grant by tallying her first Division I double-double with 12 points and 10 assists. Meanwhile, the sophomore pair of Brittni Moore and Sade' Hudson both chipped in 11 points each.
No. 4 seed Eastern Illinois (19-11) picked up a thrilling 49-46 victory over Jacksonville State in the tournament quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon. The Panthers have been hot as of late, winning eight of their last 10 contests.
