WACO, Texas – Abbie Hopkins, a junior at the University of Tennessee at Martin, was rewarded for yet another spectacular season as she was announced as a National Collegiate Equestrian Association Ariat second team All-American in the flat event today.
Hailing from Seekonk, Mass., Hopkins joins Kara Bergenty (2012-13) as only the second Skyhawk to ever earn All-American status in two different events. Hopkins previously was named a second team All-American in fences in 2018, joining current teammate Noel Meadows and Bergenty as the only UT Martin representatives to garner multiple All-American honors.
Hopkins generated eight flat victories over 11 competitions in 2019-20, topping the Skyhawks in that category. She also led or tied for the team lead with a 77.1 scoring average and three MOP's in flat, capturing MOP accolades against South Dakota State (Oct. 10), SUNY New Paltz (Feb. 21) and No. 6 Georgia (Feb. 29).
Saving her best performance for last, Hopkins' season-high score of 89 points came in the finale against Delaware State on Feb. 29. She saw the bulk of her success during an eight-competition stretch from Sept. 20 through Feb. 21 – winning seven of her head-to-head matchups over that span.
Hopkins captured six Eastern College Athletic Conference in-season honors during her successful junior campaign. She was named ECAC Flat Rider of the Month for November while notching ECAC Flat Rider of the Week accolades three times (Sept. 25, Nov. 19, Feb. 25) and a pair of ECAC Fences Rider of the Week nods (Sept. 25, Feb. 25).
In her storied three-year career, Hopkins has amassed 19 victories to go along with five MOP's in flat. She is also responsible for 13 career wins (five MOP's) in the fences event.
To qualify as an Ariat NCEA All-American, an individual must have a 67 percent or higher winning percentage, excluding ties. They also must compete in a minimum of five competitions in the NCEA format and have at least an adjusted NRS score of 85 for flat, 90 for fences, 77 for reining or 80 for horsemanship.
