The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team is in control of its own destiny in a quest for an Ohio Valley Conference championship heading into a matchup against Southeast Missouri on Saturday, Feb. 29. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (19-9, 15-2 OVC) enter the final day of the season sitting tied for first place in the OVC standings with co-leader Belmont. The math is simple, a win will clinch at least a share of the regular-season conference title and the No. 1 seed in the OVC Basketball Championship next week. A loss will drop the Skyhawks to the No. 3 seed.
UT Martin is looking to clinch its sixth OVC title and 10th 20-win season in program history with a victory over Southeast Missouri. The Skyhawks will rely on their home court to help carry the burden as UT Martin is 115-25 in the Elam Center under the direction of head coach Kevin McMillan while posting a dominating 81-11 (88 percent) record against OVC opponents at home during that span.
Junior Chelsey Perry is looking to put the finishing touches on her potential OVC Player of the Year résumé. Perry has scored 446 points (25.9 ppg) during OVC play and needs just five points to surpass former Murray State star Ashley Hayes (450) for the most points scored against OVC opponents in a single season in the past 20 years. After recently surpassing Pat Head Summitt on the program's career scoring list, Perry ranks first nationally in total points (648) and third in points per game (23.1 ppg).
Southeast Missouri (22-6, 14-3 OVC) enters the final game of the regular season with an outside chance of finishing as high as first or as low as third. The Redhawks have been dominant as of late by winning 13 of their last 14 contest. SEMO boasts two of the league's top scoring threats in Tesia Thompson (18.6 ppg, 7.5 rpg) and Carrie Shephard (16.4 ppg, 3.4 apg).
Saturday's contest marks the 71st meeting between the two programs with UT Martin holding a 39-31 series advantage. Southeast Missouri won the first meeting this season by a score of 71-69 as a potential game-winning three-point attempt by Perry rattled off the rim at the buzzer. The Skyhawks will look to continue their strong play against the Redhawks at home where they are 9-1 since 2010.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+. The action will also be broadcast on WCMT 100.5 FM / 1410 AM with Tom Britt (play-by-play) and Chris Brinkley (analyst) bringing the radio call. Links for video, audio and live stats are located at the top of the webpage.
