BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season on Tuesday evening behind a strong third quarter push to knock off former Ohio Valley Conference foe Samford, 75-67, in the Pete Hanna Center.
The Skyhawks (1-1) boasted a strong effort from the field, shooting 56.4 percent for the game – including the third quarter in which the team made 11-of-15 attempts (73.3 percent) – to take control of the contest. UT Martin would force 17 turnovers on the night while winning the battle of the boards and controlling the paint.
UT Martin was led by the strong play of All-American forward Chelsey Perry who posted her 10th career game with 30 points or more and 11th double-double with a game-high 31 points and 11 rebounds. She also rounded out her stat line with three steals, two blocks and an assist.
Newcomer Seygan Robins found her groove on both ends, tallying a career-high 16 points while dishing out six assists, two steals and two rebounds. Just missing double figures was junior Damiah Griffin who was highly efficient, scoring eight points in just over five minutes of play.

Despite playing shorthanded, Samford turned to a balanced offense to push the Skyhawks to the brink. Four Bulldogs scored in double figures as Andrea Cournoyer paced the team with 18 points off the bench while Annie Ramil recorded a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds in the losing effort. Raven Omar (12 points) and Mallory Hampton (10 points) also scored in double figures.
UT Martin jumped out to an early lead in the contest, scoring on the first possession of the game before pushing its margin out to four points midway through the first. Samford would respond with a strong run of its own to not only take the lead but push its margin out to eight points late in the first. A back-and-forth second later saw the Skyhawks cut the margin to five points heading into halftime where the squad made plenty of adjustments.
Coming out of the second half, UT Martin jumped all over Samford on both ends of the floor. The Skyhawks would rattle of a 12-0 run to retake the lead in the opening minutes of third – holding the Bulldogs without a field goal until the 2:30 mark. With the big lead in hand, UT Martin put the game away in the final minutes.
UT Martin will look to add another non-conference contest before later opening league play against Southeast Missouri on Saturday, Dec. 19.
