UT MARTIN MEN'S HOOPS RESUMES OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE PLAY WITH WEDNESDAY ROAD TRIP TO JACKSONVILLE STATE
12/28/2020 4:02:00 PM | Men's Basketball
MARTIN, Tenn. – Two of the final five unbeaten squads in Ohio Valley Conference play are set to clash as the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team travels to Jacksonville State on Wednesday, Dec. 30. Tipoff time from Pete Mathews Coliseum is set for 7:30 p.m.
Jacksonville State and Belmont are the only 2-0 teams in the early season OVC standings while the Skyhawks and SIUE also boast an unblemished 1-0 record (Eastern Illinois is the lone OVC team to have not played a league game). With a victory on Wednesday, UT Martin can improve to 2-0 in league play for just the third time in its Division I history (joining the squads from 2002-03 and 1997-98).
The Skyhawks (3-2) will be back in action for the first time in eight days, as UT Martin ended nonconference play with a tough 90-43 setback at Ole Miss on Dec. 22. In that game, Anthony Thomas tied for the team lead with seven points - marking the first time in the last 76 games that a freshman paced the Skyhawks in scoring (last accomplished at Eastern Illinois on Jan. 18, 2018).
UT Martin has shown plenty of offensive versatility so far in 2020-21, as four different Skyhawks (Eden Holt, Cameron Holden, Ajani Kennedy, Thomas) have led the team in scoring. Junior forward Jaron Williams also averages double figures in the scoring column with 10.4 points per contest.
Jacksonville State (6-2) tops the OVC in scoring defense (63.2 points per game), three-point field goal percentage defense (.285) and three-point field goals made (9.5 per contest).
The Gamecocks passed their final nonconference test with flying colors, routing Carver College by a 104-45 margin on Sunday. Darian Adams led the way with 21 points (thanks to seven trifectas) as Jacksonville State sank 15 of its 29 attempts from beyond the three-point arc for a 52 percent clip.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ while Chris Brinkley will call the action live from courtside on WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links, as well as a link to live stats, can be found at the top of the webpage.
