The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will open a season-long four-game homestand against Ohio Valley Conference foes with a matchup against Tennessee State on Thursday, Jan. 9. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+. The game also serves as New Employee Night.
The Skyhawks (6-7, 2-0 OVC) currently sit atop the OVC standing after posting a 2-0 mark on the opening weekend of the conference slate, including wins over Murray State (89-64) and Austin Peay (69-61). In the team's most recent contest, the Skyhawk post duo of Chelsey Perry (28 points, 14 rebounds) and Maddie Waldrop (22 points, 13 rebounds) combined to score 50 of the team's 69 points while both posting double-doubles. The performance marked the first time that the Skyhawks have had multiple double-doubles in a contest since Ashton Feldhaus and Janekia Mason posted double-doubles against Murray State on Jan. 28, 2017.
Perry earned her fourth OVC Player of the Week honor after a strong weekend which saw the junior average 24.0 points, 12.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.0 assists and 4.0 blocks per game. With her honor, Perry became just the fifth player to earn four player of the week honors in the same season, joining Crystal Fuller (2007-08), Jasmine Newsome (2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13), Heather Butler (2013-14) and Ashia Jones (2014-15).
Tennessee State (2-10, 0-2 OVC) enters the contest riding a three-game losing streak, including both home matchups last week against Eastern Illinois (73-52) and SIUE (76-63). The Lady Tigers boast two players in double figures with Taylor Roberts and Jasmine Young leading the way. Roberts averages 14.4 points per game while Young chips in 10.9 per night.
Thursday night's meeting marks the 64th matchup in a series which dates back to 1979. UT Martin holds a 35-28 advantage in the series while winning 12 of the last 14 contests, including seven straight at home.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and John Hatler (analyst) also bringing the radio call on WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Links for video, audio and live stats are located at the top of the webpage.
