The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will look to continue its hot start to Ohio Valley Conference play with a matchup against league rival Murray State on Thursday, Jan. 16. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., serving as the front end of a doubleheader with the game being broadcast on ESPN+.
In addition to the women's and men's basketball doubleheader, UT Martin officials will unveil a new alternate logo on Thursday. In early November, Skyhawk students, faculty, staff and alumni voted on three finalist marks with one being added to the current lineup of UT Martin logos.
The Skyhawks (8-7, 4-0 OVC) enter the contest riding a four-game winning streak. During conference play, UT Martin is scoring 80.0 points per game while outscoring its opponents by an average of 16.8 points per game. A big key for the Skyhawks has been their shooting ability, shooting 45.7 percent from the floor while controlling the battle of the boards in all four contests.
UT Martin is led by five-time OVC Player of the Week Chelsey Perry who ranks 10th nationally in field goals made (123) and 11th in points per game (20.7). Despite an injury last week, Perry still posted a dominating effort by averaging 28.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 5.0 blocks per game to sweep both Tennessee State and Belmont on the front end of the homestand. Maddie Waldrop (9.8 ppg, 7.8 rpg) has also been impressive in league play, averaging 16.8 points and 10.0 rebounds per game with a pair of double-doubles.
Murray State (8-7, 1-3 OVC) has gotten off to a slow start in league play, falling to UT Martin (89-64), Jacksonville State (68-51) and Tennessee Tech (77-72) while recording its lone win against Southeast Missouri (70-62). The Racers are led by Preseason All-OVC selection Macey Turley who chips in 18.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game.
Thursday's matchup marks the 90th meeting between the two programs in a series which dates back to 1970. UT Martin holds a 54-35 advantage in the series while winning 20 of the last 23 meetings – including an 89-64 road contest on Jan. 2. In the game, UT Martin scored a season-high 89 points while placing four players in double figures, led by Perry with 20 points and 10 rebounds while Waldrop tallied 15 points and nine rebounds.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Eddie Suiter (analyst) also bringing the radio call on WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Links for video, audio and live stats are located at the top of the webpage.
