MARTIN, Tenn. – The Eastern College Athletic Conference announced its first Rider of the Week recipients today as the University of Tennessee at Martin accounted for all four awards. The Skyhawk duo of Abbie Hopkins (flat/fences) and Tess Baumann (horsemanship/reining) each captured two accolades after strong performances against No. 1 Auburn and No. 4 Oklahoma State.
A junior out of Seekonk, Mass., Hopkins began her week with a tie in flat – securing 75 points against Auburn's Becky Kozma. Against Oklahoma State, Hopkins emerged victorious with an 80-78 head-to-head victory over Hannah Coleman in flat.
In fences, Hopkins dialed up 70 points while competing against Meghan Knapic of Auburn. Hopkins responded with a team-high 80-point effort to edge out Oklahoma State's Abigail Brayman (79) in fences, capping off a perfect 2-0 day against the nationally ranked Cowgirls.
Through two competitions, Hopkins is responsible for a 77.5 scoring average in flat and a 75.0 scoring average in fences.
Baumann nearly came away with a horsemanship victory in the season-opener against Auburn, narrowly falling to Kara Kaufmann by a 75.5-74.5 margin. In her second match of the week against Oklahoma State, she powered through for a dominant 73-61 triumph over Sydnee Gemar.
In reining, the junior from Ellensburg, Wash. again came close to a victory against Auburn but her 69 points were two points shy of Jen Kasper's winning score. Baumann completed her unbeaten day the next time out with a 71.5-point winning performance over Oklahoma State's Stephanie Helsen.
So far this season, Baumann is averaging 73.8 points in horsemanship to go along with a team-best 70.3 points in reining.
UT Martin resumes its fall slate on Friday, Oct. 4 when it travels to Oxford, Ohio for an exhibition outing against Miami (Ohio).
