MARTIN, Tenn. – The junior duo of Tess Baumann and Abbie Hopkins each collected a pair of head-to-head victories against No. 4 Oklahoma State but the 10th ranked University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian team was defeated 14-4 at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Complex.
Baumann emerged victorious in both Western events, tallying 73 points in horsemanship and 71.5 points in reining. Hopkins collected identical scores of 80 points in both Jumping Seat events, earning her first fences and flat wins of the young season.
Despite the Cowgirls winning four of the five points in horsemanship, the Skyhawks actually outscored the visitors in raw points (365.5 to 360.5). Bailey Newlin battled to a tie with her team-high 75 points. Paige Benson (73.5 points) and Lucy Eier (72.5) were both defeated by two points or less while Devon Woods rounded out UT Martin's scoring with 71.5 points.
Kelby Kane notched a head-to-head tie today in flat, putting together a 79-point performance. Randi LaChance dialed up a team-best 83 points but ran into some tough luck with a one-point setback. Quinn Reed also produced a solid score of 81 points while freshman Haley Kane posted 72 points in her collegiate debut.
In reining, Noel Meadows (68.5 points) came close to a win but was outlasted by two points. Emily Zegiestowsky bounced back from a tough opening day ride with a score of 66.5 points while Brooke Bradley (65.5) and Hannah McDonald (65) followed closely behind.
The Skyhawks had a pair of close calls in fences, as Kelby Kane's 78 points were just 2.5 points away from a win. Grace Rogers accrued a score of 77 points while Brooke Pfeiffer (75 points) was barely edged by her Oklahoma State counterpart. Haley Kane secured 69 points to complete UT Martin's scoring.
The Skyhawks will now take two weeks away from official competition, returning to action with an exhibition at Miami (Ohio) on Friday, Oct. 4.
