
NO. 10 SKYHAWKS TOPPED BY NO. 1 AUBURN IN EQUESTRIAN SEASON OPENER

MARTIN, Tenn. – The 2019-20 National Collegiate Equestrian Association season officially began today as the No. 10 ranked University of Tennessee at Martin fell to No. 1 Auburn by a 17-1 margin at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Complex.
The Skyhawks pushed the defending national champion Tigers to the brink in horsemanship before Auburn narrowly edged out the raw points by a 368-365 margin. Freshman Paige Benson scored a head-to-head in her collegiate debut, as the Spokane, Wash. native dialed up a 72-point performance to clinch the point for UT Martin. Bailey Newlin (team-best 75.5 points), Tess Baumann (74.5), Lucy Eier (74) and Devon Woods (69) all generated solid rides but were each bested by three or less points.
In flat, the Skyhawks produced a pair of draws as Abbie Hopkins (75 points) and Kenzie Mezrah (69) equaled their competitor's scores. Quinn Reed was responsible for a team-high 76 points and fell by just one point while Kelby Kane and Randi LaChance each came away with scores of 74 points apiece.
Four of UT Martin's five setbacks in reining came by three points or less. Baumann joined Hannah McDonald with identical team-best scores of 69 points as Noel Meadows (68.5) barely trailed behind. Brooke Bradley amassed 64.5 points while Emily Zegiestowsky received a no-score from the judges.
Kane led the Skyhawk charge in fences, as she registered a team-high 78 points – falling by a slim two-point margin. Freshman Tyler Anderson (75 points) was the next highest scorer in the event for UT Martin and was followed by Savannah Metheny (74), Hopkins (70) and Brooke Pfeiffer (68).
The Skyhawks also got their matchup against No. 4 Oklahoma State underway this afternoon and will conclude its competition tomorrow with the horsemanship and fences portion starting at 9 a.m.
